Metso has entered into an agreement with Mazoon Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Minerals Development Oman (MDO), to provide critical process equipment for their copper concentrator plant in Yanqul, near Sohar Industrial City.
The equipment packages under this agreement are valued at $30 million (~29 million euros). A portion of the order was recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment’s Q4 2024 order intake, with the remaining balance expected to be booked during Q1 2025.
Metso’s scope of delivery for the crushing and grinding circuits includes Nordberg C130 jaw crushers, HP200e cone crushers, apron feeders, SAG and ball mills, as well as mill reline equipment to ensure safe and efficient maintenance. Additionally, the package comprises TankCell mechanical flotation cells, high-intensity Concorde Cell units, and HRT thickeners with Reactorwell feed systems. For classification, MHC hydrocyclones will be supplied. Larox PF60 and FFP 3512 filters will be used for concentrate and tailings filtration, while a PSI500i particle size analyzer and Courier 6X SL on-line elemental analyzer will enable continuous process optimization for enhanced recovery and reduced waste.
MDO’s CEO, Mattar Al Badi, commented: “The Mazoon copper project encompasses an area of 20 km² and is anticipated to become the largest integrated copper concentrate production facility in Oman. This partnership represents a significant milestone for MDO, as it enhances our global partnerships. We are dedicated to incorporating cutting-edge technologies that will enable us to operate our mining and processing activities in a more sustainable and efficient manner. Furthermore, we are pleased to collaborate with Metso – a trusted leader in the supply of process equipment.”
The Mazoon Copper Project, a flagship initiative in Oman’s mining sector, includes five open-pit mines with copper ore reserves estimated at 22.9 million tons. The centerpiece of the project is a state-of-the-art ore processing facility covering 56,000 square meters, designed to process 2.5 million tons of copper ore annually. This facility will produce 115,000 tons of copper concentrate each year, achieving a purity level of 21.5%. This landmark project highlights MDO’s commitment to advancing Oman’s mining industry while supporting the nation’s economic diversification goals and setting a new standard for sustainable resource development.
“As a leading supplier of process technology and services to copper and gold plants around the world, Metso is excited to work as a strategic partner with Mazoon Mining in this greenfield project. A significant number of the products covered by the agreement are part of our Metso Plus offering,” says Piia Karhu, President, Minerals at Metso.
