Compass Datacenters, a leader in designing and constructing data center campuses for some of the world’s largest technology companies, has entered a multi-year agreement with Siemens to provide a custom modular medium-voltage skid solution. The agreement guarantees delivery of up to 1,500 units over the next five years, streamlining data center construction by consolidating key electrical components, such as medium-voltage switchgear and transformers, into a single, integrated unit.
This groundbreaking collaboration between Siemens and Compass Datacenters is poised to transform data center construction by reducing installation time and cutting overall costs. The modular design supports faster deployment of critical power systems, enabling Compass to meet the growing demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and the exponential increase in global data usage. Industry forecasts predict double-digit growth in the data center market through 2030.
The custom modular units, developed by Siemens, feature cutting-edge technology, including maintenance-free 8DJH 36 gas-insulated arc-resistant medium-voltage switchgear and transformers. These units not only reduce maintenance needs and extend equipment service life but also improve energy efficiency through their compact design. The standardized skid solution ensures easy deployment across diverse environments, promoting operational efficiency and resource conservation.
“Technologies like AI and cloud services present incredible opportunities while challenging the industry to scale rapidly,” said Brian Dula, Region CEO of Electrification and Automation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure USA. “Siemens’ prefabricated and modular solutions enable companies like Compass to build data centers faster and more cost-effectively, meeting the escalating demand with efficiency and reliability.”
Compass leverages off-site manufacturing and modular construction techniques to deliver large-scale data centers in as little as nine months. This partnership underscores Compass’ commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.
“This solution is a prime example of the value this partnership brings to our customers,” said Jared Day, President and CFO of Compass Datacenters. “The 8DJH 36 solution offers significant efficiency and sustainability benefits that align with Compass’ strategic goals and accelerates project timelines.”
The first installation of the modular solution will occur at Compass’ upcoming data center campus on the former Sears headquarters site in the Chicago area, with construction set to begin in the second half of 2025. Siemens’ factory-certified service personnel will provide commissioning and installation support to ensure seamless integration of the skid solution across Compass projects worldwide.
This partnership positions Compass Datacenters and Siemens at the forefront of the data center industry, setting new benchmarks for speed, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.
