The Swedish urban developer Atrium Ljungberg is spearheading a transformative urban development project in Sickla, Stockholm, with the launch of Stockholm Wood City—the world’s largest urban construction project utilizing wood as the primary building material. Spanning over 250,000 square meters, this ambitious initiative aims to create a vibrant, sustainable neighborhood that seamlessly integrates workplaces, housing, retail, and recreational spaces. Construction started in 2024 and the  the first buildings are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

A Five-Minute City Concept

Central to the project’s design is the “five-minute city” concept, ensuring that essential amenities such as shops, schools, healthcare, and workplaces are within a five-minute walk for residents and workers. This approach promotes a pedestrian-friendly environment, reduces reliance on transportation, and fosters a sense of community.

Sustainable Construction and Energy Efficiency

Stockholm Wood City emphasizes sustainability through the use of timber construction, which offers environmental benefits like carbon storage and reduced emissions. The project also incorporates renewable energy solutions, including rooftop solar panels and underground borehole energy storage systems for heating and cooling, aiming to minimize the district’s carbon footprint.

Enhanced Connectivity and Transportation

Strategically located in southern Stockholm, Sickla is set to become a major transportation hub with the addition of new metro lines and improved connections to existing transit systems. This enhanced connectivity is expected to facilitate easy commutes and attract businesses and residents to the area.

Opportunities for Businesses and Residents

With plans to introduce approximately 7,000 office spaces and 2,000 homes, Stockholm Wood City presents significant opportunities for businesses seeking sustainable office environments and individuals desiring eco-friendly living spaces. Atrium Ljungberg invites companies to participate in the development process, offering the chance to customize office spaces that align with their sustainability goals.
